The BIG.NINE TR impresses MTB-News

BIG.NINE TR 600

Our BIG.NINE TR 600 was put through its paces in the latest entry-level trail hardtail test by Germany’s MTB-News. The TR, whose focus is “on demanding XC trails through to down-country and trail descents”, was able to surprise positively. Thanks to its 120mm suspension fork with lockout, dropper post, trail-ready geometry, included mini-tool and removable Allen lever on the rear axle, it offers a lot of bike for a small budget.

"For €1,449, Merida has put together an exciting package with a great specification," said the test team. As well as an extremely solid Shimano CUES drivetrain, the in-house dropper post "impresses with its 'inconspicuous' function". The down tube offers plenty of space "for two bottle cage mounts". A useful feature when the trails go on for miles. The frame also looks "very clean" due to its internal cable routing.

"The tyres are a plus: The easy-rolling Maxxis Rekon tyres offer the lowest rolling resistance in the test field," the test team also noted. Not surprisingly, the BIG.NINE TR is equally at home climbing as it is on the flat. The frame also showed "unexpectedly high downhill potential". The rear end flexes pleasantly and forgives "the odd rough line choice". The result is a "surprisingly comfortable ride".

The editors' verdict:
"The MERIDA BIG.NINE TR 600 covers a wide range of uses: at an affordable price of €1,449, it satisfies a touring-orientated clientele that likes to hit a nice trail now and again - the sporty riding position, the well rolling tyres and the solid components make this possible. On the other hand, the frame offers trail enthusiasts a lot of fun on rough descents thanks to the very pleasant frame flex and suitable geometry [...] even downhill".

What the testers particularly praised:
+ Comfortable frame
+ Good rolling tyres
+ Lowest weight in the test
